HOLK Networks

Concept

Independent communication infrastructure

HOLK Networks studies how devices can reach each other when ordinary internet service is missing, congested or not trusted. The model is a private mesh: short radio hops between nodes, with solar power as one way to keep a node running away from the mains.

The diagram on this page is a teaching model. HOLK TECH has not deployed a public mesh, and the page does not describe a tested city-scale network.

A device hands a message to the nearest node.

What this area covers

  • Device-to-device forwarding, so a message can cross several nodes without a central switchboard.
  • Off-grid connectivity for places where a normal connection is unavailable.
  • Solar-powered nodes as a power concept for equipment that must stay up without a wall socket.
  • A resilient layout in which the loss of one node removes a path, not the whole conversation.

Applications

Useful pictures of the idea include a worksite, a harbour, a farm or a neighbourhood exercise where people still need to pass short messages. These are examples of the problem, not case studies of HOLK TECH installations.
